Description (anglais) : Gradually a protective crowd gathered in front of the hôtel de ville, saying that the [Protestant] consuls might be arrested and, if so, that 'one must kill, kill!'. This crowd, consisting of a core of armed supporters and a larger group of sympathizers, was obviously a factional force organized to support a party, the Little Cross, which enjoyed wide popularity. Its leaders were public officials - hence quasi-legitimate - but they were also rebels against other public officials who had an external royal mandate on their side.
