Center right: the imposing temple of Venus and Rome was built by Hadrian (ca. 135 AD). During construction, 24 elephants were used to transport the colossal statue of Nero (35 meters high) to its position next to the Colosseum. Of the two cellae, that of Rome (west side) with porphyry columns and polychrome marble pavement is better preserved than that of Venus (Colosseum side).
