The
University of Caen Lower-Normandy
Created
in 1432 by the King of England, the University was totally
destroyed during the 1944 bombings.
It was rebuilt in 1956, on the north end of the Duke's castle,
as an american-like campus : wide-open areas and green spaces.
The Phoenix, bird reborn from its ashes, has become the symbol
of the University and stands at its main entrance.
The University has now three other campuses around the city
and five university antenas throughout the region where are
gathered some 27 000 students.
Pluridisciplinary, the University of Caen responds to young
students aspirations by offering quality majors strenghtened
by high-level research.

The
city and the region
Located
in the heart of Calvados, the city of Caen allies the richness
of its historical inheritage to the facilities of the modern
city.
The city of Willem the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King
of England, was built around his medieval castle and his two
abbeys. A walk to those three monuments will take you through
the herat of the city, its shopping areas, its theaters, its
pleasance harbor, the Vaugueux district and its restaurants,
its horse racing track...
And a few minutes from there, one of its kind, the Memorial,
Peace Museum.
All around the city, you will discover the charm of the norman
countryside, between Bessin and Bocage, between nature and
gastronomic tradition, magical places which will marvel fresh
air and nature lovers.
North of the city, with a 15 minutes drive, is the norman
seaside. From the Mont Saint-Michel to the Normandy bridge,
you will discover the charm of Honfleur's old harbor, inspiration
for many painters ; you will relive the history of June 1944
landings through the monuments and museums ; you will relax
in one of the many seaside resorts, from Cabourg to to Deauville
; you will get on board one of the three daily ferries to
England in Ouistreham and will then follow the road taken
900 years ago by Willem the Conqueror.
