THE
CITY
|
|
|
|
Besançon
is a city of 135 000 inhabitants located 2h ½ from Paris
by high-speed train and situated in the centre of Europe, about
60 miles from the Swiss border and 130 miles from the German border.
Founded in the Roman times, it boasts a rich historical heritage
and an intense cultural life. Set up in the heart of a multi-faceted
region the University offers a range of study areas which reflect
the available diversity within European and international dimensions.
When the snow falls in winter you may take advantage of the ski-slopes
only one hour away from Besançon, Alpine skiing on the slopes
of Jura mountains or Nordic skiing in the fir tree forests of Haut-Doubs.
In spring and autumn, you may discover the richness of the protected
flora and fauna. Water is truly an omnipresent force: innumerable
springs, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes can be explored during walks
along the banks and in the gorges, by boat along the Doubs River,
or by canoe or kayak for a more adventurous descent of the Loue
River.
In summer, the countryside and its wood invite to stroll read and
enjoy the fresh air and unspoilt scenery.
